Understanding Koumpounophobia: The Fear of Buttons Explained

The word Koumpounophobia is derived from Latin Koumpouno meaning buttons and Greek phobos meaning fear. This unique phobia is closely related to the fear of round or circular objects or the fear of holes (trypophobia), showcasing how varied human anxieties can be. Koumpounophobia is a relatively rare phobia, but one that does exist, affecting certain individuals to a significant degree. It is, simply explained, an irrational and persistent fear of buttons (standalone ones or those on clothing), which can lead to major emotional distress. People suffering from Koumpounophobia typically go to great lengths to avoid clothes with buttons, opting instead for alternative styles like zippers or drawstrings that do not disrupt their comfort. Even the thought, discussion, or sight of buttons can trigger a full-blown anxiety attack, leading to symptoms such as sweating, trembling, or even panic. This phobia can severely limit individuals’ choices in fashion and everyday interactions. Research indicates that nearly 1 in 75,000 people are known to experience this phobia, although many may not even realize their aversion has a name, thus contributing to the challenges they face in understanding and addressing their fear.
